Lunch Atop a Skyscraper - New York Vintage Black and White Art
"Lunch Atop a Skyscraper" is one of the best photos of all time. Eleven workers, mostly immigrants, eating sandwiches and smoking cigarettes as they casually sit, balancing nonchalantly on the tiny width of a crossbeam hundreds of feet in the air.
The men are both ethereal and heavy, wingless Icaruses weighted to earth by the sweat on their coveralls and the dirt on their boots. They are taking a break from building the RCA building (a.k.a. 30 Rock), the towering centerpiece of Rockefeller Center.
The photograph was taken in 1932, at the height of the skyscraper boom in New York City; the year before, the Empire State Building was completed, and the year before that, the Chrysler Building became the first man-made structure to top one thousand feet.
